This is the place for me to relax, goof off and have some fun. The fun part? This page will change all the time.
A friend and I celebrated my birthday in early December at Frevo, a Michelin-starred restaurant that hides behind an art gallery on West Eighth Street, just down from See’s Candies.
When I picked it, the website said it was French, but really, it’s quite different. It kept surprising – and pleasing – me all night. You sit at a counter and watch the food being prepared, almost like in some Korean restaurants. It’s a fixed-price, fixed-menu with a couple of pricey options for truffles or caviar. The food was excellent and always surprising: tucked beneath shaved white truffles was sticky rice; a carrot appetizer contained ice cream; the sea bass was painted red, white and black, like some of the paintings displayed. In many of the dishes, the flavors changed and developed in your mouth. To go with it all, Frevo offered a really interesting and delicious pairing of non-alcoholic teas, juices and mixes. Of course, they have wine pairings, too.
Overall, a great place! I’d go back! And after all, See’s Candies is just steps away…
